Stern Group’s founder, the late Ben Stern, was a true survivor in every sense of the word. He not only endured the atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II but also thrived as an immigrant to America, becoming a successful business owner. Ben’s son, Bill Stern, the President and CEO of Stern Group, always admired his father’s work ethic and ability to adapt. He recalls being amazed at how well his father both spoke and wrote English, especially considering it was neither his first nor second language. In fact, when Ben immigrated to the United States, he couldn’t speak, write, or understand English.

Bill always loved his father’s signature and how elegantly he wrote it. After Ben’s passing in 1999, Bill decided to incorporate his father’s signature into the company logo to honor both the man and his legacy. This sense of pride, honoring legacy, and maintaining integrity remains firm at Stern Group today. While always looking ahead to improve and grow, the company never forgets its humble beginnings. They continue to uphold Ben Stern’s motto: being thankful to live in the land of the free and always giving back to a country that has given so much to their family. Ben Stern’s signature serves as the centerpiece of the company, a constant reminder of these values.

I weighed 87 or 89 pounds. Inwardly, I was overjoyed, but if you had been an American soldier and had looked at me, there was no reaction, because I could not move. I was flat gone. It was a blessing in disguise that I couldn’t eat. Other prisoners went to the bunkers, the area where potatoes were stored underground, and started eating raw potatoes. Many died.” -Ben Stern
